Degree evaluation policy

Overview

ABET-accredited curricula DO NOT require degree evaluation

Ohio Revised Code [R.C.] section 4733.11(A)(1) provides that applicants with an engineering degree of four years or more that is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET [EAC/ABET] meet the educational requirements to become a Professional Engineer [P.E.] in Ohio.

R.C. 4733.11(A)(1) applicants must have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam and have four years or more of engineering experience after graduation in order to qualify to take the Principles and Practice of Engineering [PE] examination.

Ohio Revised Code section 4733.11(A)(2) provides that applicants with an engineering degree of four years or more that is not accredited by EAC/ABET or an engineering technology degree of four years or more that is accredited by the Technical Accreditation Commission of ABET [TAC/ABET] meet the educational requirements to become a P.E. in Ohio.

R.C. 4733.11(A)(2) applicants must have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam and have eight years or more of engineering experience after graduation in order to qualify to take the PE examination.

Degree evaluation process

Non-ABET-accredited curricula REQUIRE degree evaluation

Applicants are responsible for filing the necessary paperwork and fees with the Center for Professional Engineering Educational Center in order to complete the evaluation of their non-ABET-accredited curricula.

Once the Center for Professional Engineering Educational Center [CPEES], an affiliate of the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying, has completed the evaluation, have them send it to the Board. Only then, submit your application and $25.00 fee to the Board.

The Board does not evaluate or accredit engineering curricula or degrees; instead, the Board relies on professional evaluators to accredit curricula.

U.S. non-ABET degree evaluation required

If an applicant has an engineering degree of four years or more granted by an institution within the United States that is not accredited by ABET, the institution must be accredited by a Regional Institution Accrediting Agency of the U.S. Department of Education in order to meet the educational requirements of R.C. section 4733.11(A)(2).

The applicant must also have the degree evaluated by CPEES and it must be evaluated as equivalent to those curricula which are accredited by ABET.

Non-U.S. degree evaluation required

The Board requires all degrees granted outside the United States be evaluated by CPEES.

In order to meet the educational requirement of R.C. section 4733.11(A)(2), the degree must be evaluated by CPEES as equivalent to those curricula which are accredited by ABET.

ABET-accredited graduate degree waiver

If an applicant receives a baccalaureate degree in engineering from an institution that is not accredited by ABET, and a graduate degree from an institution whose undergraduate program is ABET-accredited, the Board may review the applicant's transcripts and waive the need to submit a degree evaluation.
